How does saliva POCT drug testing work?

When a drug is taken, it enters a person’s bloodstream and the drug is metabolised within the body. After this, what remains of the drug gets excreted out of the body. One method of excretion is through saliva. As a result, we can analyse the metabolites of drugs in the saliva.

First, the saliva sample is obtained and collected using a mouth swab device. The screen within the device is then activated by the collection officer. Results of the screen can usually be observed around 5 to 10 minutes after activation. Next, the collection officer will read and record the results on the chain of custody document. A non-negative result could be an indication that a metabolite of the drug group may be present in the saliva sample. In this case, and if authorised to do so, we will obtain a fresh saliva sample and dispatch this to the laboratory for saliva confirmation drug testing.

What are the limitations of saliva POCT drug testing?

There are many benefits in using this test. But there are limitations that you must take into account before deciding if this is the right one for your circumstances. These include:

  • Laboratory drug testing is more accurate.
  • False positive and negative results can occur. This is why we recommend laboratory analysis for all non-negative results from a saliva POCT screen.
  • Urine POCT results are not legally defensible.
  • Taking disciplinary action based on urine POCT test results is not advisable. Instant saliva drug testing is not legally defensible due to potential false positives or negatives. Laboratory confirmation testing must be undertaken before making any disciplinary decisions.
  • The detection period is very short (up to two days). If you need a longer period of analysis, it may be worth considering urine or hair drug testing.
