Safety critical medicals are available at selected medical centres throughout the UK. They suit a wide range of fit for work standards in all safety critical roles across many industry sectors.
The safety critical medical ensures that employees operating in safety critical work environments are fit to perform the tasks required. Depending on the industry type, there are several variations of safety critical medical assessments available. For example, the information on this page, details the standards required for the construction industry. However, you will find that this covers the basic safety critical medical requirements for most industry types. Also, it is normal for a drug and alcohol test to be performed at the same time as the safety critical medical.
Before you attend the safety critical medical, we will notify you or your employer on what you must bring with you for your appointment, these include:
Unfortunately, if you attend your appointment without the necessary information, the safety critical medical may have to be rearranged at an additional cost.
To pass the safety critical medical, you will need to meet all the standards associated with the assessment. Even so, we may still provide you with some general health advice based on the findings during your medical.
If you fail to meet the standards, we will communicate the outcome to you and outline the next steps. This could include requesting information from your GP, optician, consultant, or hospital. Or, your medical results may have be referred to our responsible occupational physician (ROP). Whatever the outcome, our team will provide you with all the support and advice you need and keep you up to date at each stage of the process.
First, you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. Next, you will be invited into the medical room by the Occupational Health Technician, nurse or doctor. Dependant on whether a drug and alcohol test is required, the following tasks are performed:
General health advice may be provided throughout the safety critical medical. Also, once the assessment is complete, our team may be in touch to request further information regarding elements of your health. As a result, you may need to contact your GP or optician for the information.
If applicable, the drug and alcohol test performed at the safety critical medical consists of a urine laboratory drug test and breath alcohol screen.
