The safety critical medical ensures that employees operating in safety critical work environments are fit to perform the tasks required. Depending on the industry type, there are several variations of safety critical medical assessments available. What do you need to bring with you for a safety critical medical?

Before you attend the safety critical medical, we will notify you or your employer on what you must bring with you for your appointment, these include:

  • Current official photo identification. For example, current driving licence or passport.
  • Details of all medication that you are taking regularly.
  • Bring any corrective visual aids (if worn) for distance vision to your appointment. If you wear contact lenses, then you must also bring your spectacles that should be of an equivalent prescription.

Unfortunately, if you attend your appointment without the necessary information, the safety critical medical may have to be rearranged at an additional cost.

What happens after the safety critical medical?

To pass the safety critical medical, you will need to meet all the standards associated with the assessment. Even so, we may still provide you with some general health advice based on the findings during your medical.

If you fail to meet the standards, we will communicate the outcome to you and outline the next steps. This could include requesting information from your GP, optician, consultant, or hospital. Or, your medical results may have be referred to our responsible occupational physician (ROP). Whatever the outcome, our team will provide you with all the support and advice you need and keep you up to date at each stage of the process.

What happens at the safety critical medical?

First, you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. Next, you will be invited into the medical room by the Occupational Health Technician, nurse or doctor. Dependant on whether a drug and alcohol test is required, the following tasks are performed:

  • Urine dip test for protein and glucose.
  • Epworth sleep questionnaire (if applicable).
  • Blood pressure and pulse are measured.
  • Height, weight and BMI.
  • Mobility and balance checks.
  • The candidates general health.
  • Visual acuity checks including distance, colour vision and visual field.
  • Audiometry (hearing) test.
  • Lung function - spirometry test. (optional, additional costs may apply)

General health advice may be provided throughout the safety critical medical. Also, once the assessment is complete, our team may be in touch to request further information regarding elements of your health. As a result, you may need to contact your GP or optician for the information.

If applicable, the drug and alcohol test performed at the safety critical medical consists of a urine laboratory drug test and breath alcohol screen.

How much does the safety critical medical cost?

The price of the safety critical medical depends on the following factors:

  • Whether the safety critical medical is to be performed at a medical centre or on-site at your location.
  • The location of the medical centre.
  • Whether drug and alcohol testing is to be performed with the safety critical medical.
