Urine laboratory drug testing

The urine laboratory drug test is considered best practice across safety critical industries. As a result, laboratory reports from this drug test are court admissible. Furthermore, it has an effective drug detection window for the average person of up to *five days. The test is a popular workplace drug test and used for for pre-employment, random, for-cause testing and Network Rail drug and alcohol testing. All testing is conducted in UKAS 17025 ISO accredited laboratory facilities. * Dependant on multiple factors.

How does urine laboratory drug testing work?

After taking a drug, the substance enters a person’s bloodstream and is transferred from the liver to the bladder. As a result, what remains of the drug is excreted out of the body through urine.

First, we perform a screen of the sample at the laboratory. The screen is very accurate and the analysis takes 1 to 2 working days to complete from the day of the appointment. If the analysis detects nothing in the screen, we will issue a negative (Pass) report. But if the sample screens non-negative, the sample will go on for further confirmation drug testing. In this case, we will issue an ‘Undergoing Further Analysis’ notification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at the sample collection?

We perform the sample collection using strict chain of custody procedures. Also, the collection is undertaken by trained and certified sample collection officers. In addition, identification takes place by obtaining official ID such as passport or driving licence. The urine sample will be split into an A and B sample, written consent is obtained from the donor, and the samples and documentation are sent securely to the laboratory for analysis.

What is laboratory confirmation drug testing?

Confirmation drug testing will identify the drug or metabolite found in the sample. Also, it will determine the quantity of the drug present. This process can take up to a further three to five working days.

Next, if the presence of the drug is over a specific cut-off level, we will issue a positive lab report. This could provide evidence of abuse.

In this case, the report may specify whether the drug and its quantity are therapeutic. For instance, in line with declared medication. To confirm this, we may also offer an optional Medical Review Service.

When should the urine laboratory drug test be used?

The urine laboratory drug test is an accredited legally defensible method. For example, the laboratory test report can be used as evidence in a disciplinary process, employment tribunal or for court purposes.

It has many uses in safety critical industry including:

  • Random screening programmes.
  • Pre-employment drug testing as part of a recruitment process.
  • ‘For cause’ situations.

In addition, this is the drug test of choice for many safety critical industry sectors and organisations including Network Rail, Sellafield, nuclear power stations, National Grid, utilities and waste management companies throughout the UK.

What are cut-off levels?

Urine laboratory drug tests use cut-off levels. This means that a result will only be reported as positive if the amount of the drug is above a certain level. Cut-off levels follow EWDTS guidelines. Having cut-off levels helps prevent false-positive results. Also, they reduce the chance of testing positive after only passive exposure to a drug.

What is the cost of the urine laboratory drug test?

The cost per person can be very competitive depending on the number of individuals attending the appointment. This can be as little as £60 per person, including a breath alcohol test. Appointments for single individuals at a clinic start from £180.
