National Grid Drug and Alcohol Testing

Crystal Health Group provide drug and alcohol testing to National Grid, utilities and energy companies using the approved panel of drug groups to be tested for.

We perform thousands of drug and alcohol tests per year to meet the requirements for National Grid sites and utility companies throughout the UK. Drug testing requirements range from individual contractors to organisations who require personnel to work on safety critical sites. These include Nuclear facilities such as Sellafield and coal fired power stations.

The test performed must be a urine laboratory screen and confirmation, rather than an instant point of care urine test. This is often used for pre-employment, random or for-cause testing within this industry, demonstrating accurate methodology and legally defensible results.

There is a particular panel of drugs required for National Grid standard. This includes:

  • Amphetamine (including Methamphetamine)
  • Barbiturates (including Secobarbitone, Phenobarbitone, and others)
  • Benzodiazepines (including Diazepam, Temazepam and others)
  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • Methadone
  • Opiates (including Morphine, Dihydrocodeine and others)
  • Ethanol
  • Phencyclidine
  • Propoxyphene
  • Ketamine

For those working on most nuclear sites e.g. Sellafield, a similar panel is required. This includes:

  • Amphetamine (including Methamphetamine)
  • Barbiturates (including Secobarbitone, Phenobarbitone, and others)
  • Benzodiazepines (including Diazepam, Temazepam and others)
  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • Methadone
  • Opiates (including Morphine, Dihydrocodeine and others)
  • Ethanol

Each Donor is legally identified at the appointment. The urine samples are then collected, sealed and bar coded to strict chain of custody protocols. Samples are then processed to our UKAS 17025 accredited laboratory, where an initial screening drug test is performed.

The report, if negative in the screening phase, will be available within 2 working days of the appointment. Samples that screen non-negative undergo additional confirmation testing. Confirmation Testing is required to identify the drug or metabolite found in the sample and the quantity present. The final report may specify if the drug and its quantity can be deemed therapeutic (in line with declared medication). This is provided at no extra cost.

Further investigation to confirm this may be undertaken by using our medical review service at an additional cost of £90+VAT per donor.
