National Grid Drug and Alcohol Testing

Crystal Health Group provide Drug and Alcohol Testing to National Grid. This includes utilities and energy companies using an approved panel of drug groups.

We perform thousands of drug and alcohol tests each year to meet the standards for National Grid. Also, this includes waste and utility companies throughout the UK. Drug testing requirements range from individual contractors to organisations who require personnel to work on safety critical sites. These include Nuclear facilities such as Sellafield and coal fired power stations. The test performed must be a urine laboratory screen and confirmation. As a result, instant point of care urine testing is not usually permitted. Furthermore, reasons for testing include pre-employment, random and for-cause testing.

There is a standard panel of drugs required for National Grid and utilities. This includes:

  • Amphetamine (including Methamphetamine)
  • Barbiturates (including Secobarbitone, Phenobarbitone, and others)
  • Benzodiazepines (including Diazepam, Temazepam and others)
  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • Methadone
  • Opiates (including Morphine, Dihydrocodeine and others)
  • Ethanol
  • Phencyclidine
  • Propoxyphene
  • Ketamine

For those working on most nuclear sites e.g. Sellafield, a similar panel is required. This includes:

  • Amphetamine (including Methamphetamine)
  • Barbiturates (including Secobarbitone, Phenobarbitone, and others)
  • Benzodiazepines (including Diazepam, Temazepam and others)
  • Cannabis
  • Cocaine
  • Methadone
  • Opiates (including Morphine, Dihydrocodeine and others)
  • Ethanol

At your appointment

We legally identify each donor at the appointment. Next, we collect the urine sample which we seal and bar code to strict chain of custody protocols. After this, samples are processed at our UKAS 17025 accredited laboratory where an initial drug screen is performed.

The report, if negative in the screening phase, will be available within 2 working days of the appointment. Samples that screen non-negative undergo additional confirmation testing. We perform confirmation testing to identify the drug or metabolite found in the sample and the quantity present. Finally, the confirmation report may specify if the drug and its quantity can be deemed therapeutic (in line with declared medication). This is provided at no extra cost.

Further investigation to confirm a confirmation result may be undertaken. You can order this Medical Review service at an additional cost of £95+VAT per donor.
