We maintain this important accreditation through the official RISQS audit process. Drug and alcohol tests are performed for Network Rail and its subcontractors and uploaded to the Sentinel system. We offer Pre-appointment (Pre-employment) testing, random testing and periodic testing for organisations and contractors. Also, a for-cause immediate response drug testing service is also available for contractors looking to satisfy their own RISQS audit requirements.
In addition, we can provide ‘Rail Standard’ testing for non-Sentinel purposes. For example, we provide non-Sentinel Network Rail standard drug and alcohol testing for Euro Star cabin crew.

What happens at the appointment for a Network Rail drug and alcohol test?
Prior to your Network Rail drug and alcohol test appointment, we will require the following information from you:
- Sponsor name
- Sponsor contact number
- Sponsor email address
- Sentinel number (if applicable)
The appointment involves obtaining a urine sample from the donor. The process follows that of the urine drug test chain of custody with a few of subtle differences.
- Accepted forms of ID also include a current Sentinel card.
- The breath alcohol cut-off level is expressed as anything above 13 Micrograms of alcohol per one hundred millilitres of breath, or 13μg/100ml. In other words, a reading of 14μg/100ml or above will mean a fail.
- We will record the donor's National Insurance number.
The donor's National Insurance number is used to search and access their profile on the Sentinel system for uploading the test results.
How long does it take for the Network Rail drug test results?
By choosing the point of care urine drug test, results are provided instantly. Alternatively, laboratory screen results for the Network Rail drug test are reported within 1 to 2 working days. If confirmation testing is required, this can take up to a further 3 to 5 working days. For all positive confirmation drug results, a medical review must take place using a Medical Review Officer (MRO). This is is required by Network Rail to provide confirmation of a positive drug result. This will also provide information regarding positive results consistent with declared medication.

What drugs are tested for the Network Rail drug test?
We test the following drug groups at the laboratory as required by RISQS:
Amphetamines, Benzodiazepines, Cannabis, Cocaine, Methadone, Opiates, MDMA (Ecstasy), Tramadol and Ketamine.
Alcohol is screened for by using a Home Office approved breath alcohol device as required by Network Rail standards.
What if I fail a Network Rail drug and alcohol test?
Anyone failing a drug and alcohol test for Network Rail, could be banned from working in the rail industry for 5 years. Processes are in place to ensure that the testing process is fair, while strict chain of custody standards are maintained at all times. In addition, a second sample of the urine collected is available to the donor to arrange testing at another RISQS accredited laboratory.
